Did Corey Clark Win American Idol 4?
While Bo Bice and Carrie Underwood fans still heatedly
debate the results of the American Idol Finale, most of the mass
media has refocused their efforts on providing around-the-clock
coverage of Corey Clark’s every move. Carrie Underwood
got all of one day of press coverage in celebration of her win
before the headlines switched back to a contestant that was kicked
off of American Idol two years ago. Corey Clark might have lost
his chance at winning American Idol 2 but the mass media looks
to crown him the real winner of American Idol 4.
The most recent Corey Clark publicity opportunity came as a result
of a six minute long segment on the American Idol Finale poking
fun of Corey. The segment hyped as a Crime Time Special Investigation
was called “Bad Judgement.” The parody involved an
investigation into a secret relationship that Simon Cowell was
having with…himself. Randy Jackson played the role of Corey
Clark in the segment and spewed out allegations while hawking a
book and CD. The segment was hilarious and was one of the highlights
of the
American Idol Finale, however, it was unusual that so much
time was devoted to parodying a former contestant. To put it in
perspective, the parody was about equal to the amount of time that
American Idol winner Carrie Underwood got to sing in the Finale.
Just like with the Saturday Night Live parody, American Idol’s parody opened
up the door for more press releases and exposure for Corey Clark. Jed Wallace,
spokesman for Corey Clarke, issued a press release criticizing the spoof. The
press release accuses American Idol and Fox of making “a complete mockery
of their viewers, their sponsors, and the FCC.” The press release also
criticizes Fox for failing to investigate these serious charges. (Which is ironic
since Corey Clark has refused to help Fox in any investigation.) The press release
concludes by asking Fox, “Ratings or no ratings, where is your professionalism,
honor, and
integrity?”
Several weeks ago, we jokingly suggested that maybe Corey Clark and American
Idol producers were in cahoots to draw attention away from other scandals like
the Constantine Maroulis’ elimination. Now, we’re starting to wonder
if our joke might actually be true. Every time we think the Corey Clark scandal
is dead something brings him back. We’re starting to wonder if Corey
Clark
might still be making headlines on up until American Idol 5. It’s a shame
that Corey has succeeded in stealing a spotlight that should now belong to Carrie
Underwood. We're hoping that the news focus quickly turns back to the singers
that were actually in the American Idol competition this year.
