American Idol Winner Carrie Underwood Goes Country
All signs seem to be pointing to American Idol Winner Carrie Underwood
being marketed as a country artist. Her first concert performance
since she was declared the American Idol winner has been announced.
Carrie will perform on Thursday, June 9, 2005 at the CMA (Country
Music Association) Music Festival in Nashville, Tennessee. Carrie
will also participate in a CMT (Country Music Television) 100
Greatest Duets concert taping on Wednesday, June 8, 2005. And
on Friday, June 10, 2005, Carrie Underwood will make her debut
on the Grand Ole Opry.
Who would have thought that when American Idol 4 first premiered
that it would eventually come down to country vs. rock n’ roll?
Even more surprising, who would have thought that the country music
charge would be led by a young, up-and-coming female singer that
appealed highly to American Idol teen and young adult fans, while
the rock n’ roll charge would be led by an older, more-experienced
male singer that brought in an older adult listening base to American
Idol.
There was a time when the word “country music” conjured
up images of older male singers like Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings,
or Johnny Cash. But both Jennings and Cash have passed away, and
country music has taken on a much younger image. Not only did a
young female country singer win American Idol, but on the most
recent version of Nashville Star, an 18-year old high school girl
named Erika Jo beat out older, seasoned performers to take the
Nashville Star title.
Are singers like Miranda Lambert, Carrie Underwood, and Erika Jo a sign that
country music is alive and strong among today’s youth? According to the
Country Music Association, country music is enjoying a new boon period, as 2004
saw a 12 percent increase in country music album sales over 2003.
The rise of Carrie Underwood could serve to further increase the appeal of country
music to America’s youth. Carrie’s first single features the country
song “Independence Day,” and her version of “Bless the Broken
Road” is at number 50 on the Hot Country Songs chart.
