The Farr Side: ‘Idol’ gets a classy close
to season

Sturgis JournalWhen Ryan Seacrest revealed that Carrie Underwood
was the next “American Idol,” I nearly freaked. I thought
for sure Bo Bice had it in the bag.
Bo seemed to be everybody’s favorite in the conversations
I had with people and with most of the online polls I read regarding
who the winner would be.
I should have known better than to rely on polls. We all know how
screwed up they have become.
Aside from being miffed about the outcome, I also was somewhat
relieved that he didn’t win.
I believe Bice will be able to score an even better recording deal
than what the winner of the show gets.
For a while after Season 2, I tried to figure out where Clay Aiken
went wrong. It didn’t make sense to me that Ruben Studdard
won, when it was very clear that Aiken possessed the real talent
of the two.
Aiken was able to get a deal of his own from none other than Clive
Davis himself, the man who backs the winners of “American
Idol.”
Aiken’s album ultimately outsold Studdard’s, but it
also proved something else in my eyes. Nice guys don’t have
to finish first to come out on top.
Bice showed real talent by not caving to what is currently considered
fresh, hip or cutting edge. He was himself and sang what fit his
persona.
I believe it worked.
Underwood did a nice job on the show and I’m happy for her
newfound success. I hope she can handle the demands that will placed
on her.
My only wish for her, though, is that she doesn’t limit herself to just
country music, like she hinted on the show from time to time. There are far too
many like her already in country music that I’m afraid she’d be lost
in the shuffle somewhere.
Underwood may have won, but that doesn’t mean she was the best. The finale
show proved that.
I give the producer’s of “American Idol” big applause for how
they brought this season to a close.
The finale was classy, entertaining and just the perfect way to showcase the
best season yet for the reality TV talent show.
I still say Vonzell Solomon was the most talented of all the top 12 finalists
and I predict that she’ll become just as successful as Underwood, if not
more.
Solomon was a true class act, performing “With You I’m Born Again” with
Billy Preston at the finale. I truly loved it, and her smile said it all for
me.
The others did a great job, too. I especially thought it was cool to see them
paired up like they were with other stars.
Anthony Federov and Anwar Robinson were great with Kenny G as were Nikko Smith
and Scott Savol with George Benson.
Rumors and scandals might have plagued the show this season, but be smart about
what you read or hear.
I am inclined to believe Corey Clarke milked his “American Idol” discharge
on season two to promote the release of his album at Paula Abdul’s expense.
I’d be ashamed if I were him.
Clarke can count on my vote for “loser of the year.”
