American Idol Rumor: American Idol Conspiracy: Paula Abdul & Corey Clark Divert Attention Away From Constantine Maroulis

Imagine a dark Hollywood alley, not too far from Ryan Seacrest’s star on the Walk of Fame. Two mysterious, shadowy figures are whispering, the sound of their voices barely audible in the night air.

John: Are you sure you want to go through with this?

Nigel: We don’t have any choice. We underestimated the outrage when we disposed of the problem. They’re flooding our phone lines, filling our e-mail in-boxes, some of them have even threatened to (shudder) boycott our sponsors.

John: The sponsors, (gasp) I didn’t realize it was that bad.

Nigel: Yeah, we’ve heard rumors there’s even a petition out there with around 40,000 names on it. We need something explosive to distract the media.

John: Explain to me again why you had to get rid of the problem to begin with.

Nigel: He outsmarted us. He signed over some pre-recorded work to his band before coming on the show. Now, they’re releasing a CD. We can’t have someone cutting us out of our 95%. It might give the other contestants ideas.

John: I understand but don’t you think this is kind of drastic. It could cost you one of your judges.

Nigel: She’s an acceptable casualty. We were planning on replacing her next year with Britney Spears anyway to spice the show up.

John: What about the kid? He’s ok with it?

Nigel: We’ve had him under contract for two years for just this type of emergency. Plus, he’s got an album coming out. He’ll say anything we want him to say if it buys him another 15 minutes of exposure.

John: What if the FCC gets involved?

Nigel: It’s taken care of. The kid is going to refuse to cooperate in any investigations. Are your people ok with us publically trashing the expose and calling it shoddy journalism?

John: You should know better than anybody that all press is good press. Tell your people to feel free to fire away.

Of course, the above conversation never happened (as far as we know), but we have to wonder if the Paula Abdul and Corey Clark scandal isn’t a blessing in disguise for Fox and American Idol producers. The hottest story going before the ABC Primetime Live “Fallen Idol” special was the surprise elimination of Constantine Maroulis from American Idol 4. Now, all the surveys about “Do you think Constantine’s elimination was rigged?” have turned into surveys about “Do you think Paula will be fired?” There were serious questions called into play over the voting results on the week that Constantine was eliminated. Questions that Fox either couldn’t answer or wouldn’t answer. How many votes did Constantine lose by? How many votes were thrown out due to power dialing? Why were Constantine’s phone lines busy?

Now, the entire media is completely distracted by the Paula Abdul scandal. Too distracted to even wonder how Scott Savol wasn’t even in the bottom three one week after having an off performance and then was quietly eliminated the next week after having one of his best performances of the competition. Really, if Scott had this massive amount of voters behind him whether they were his fans or backers of VotefortheWorst.com, then where did all of them go. Most agreed that Scott’s performance was actually much better in the week that he was actually eliminated, so it’s not like his fans would have suddenly deserted him. And as far as the VotefortheWorst.com conspiracy, their movement actually gained massive additional exposure after the Constantine elimination. If anything, then they probably should have sent more votes to Scott Savol than ever before. If you start to question where all Scott's votes went to, then you have to question how he ever beat out Constantine.

So instead of the media turning their attention on a bizarre sequence of voting events that call this year’s competition into question, the media is reporting on an event from three years ago that has no bearing on the current season. Really, even if all of Corey Clark’s allegations are true, and Paula Abdul did have an affair with him and coach him during his season of American Idol, then we see all the good it did him. Corey Clark got booted from the show and has been pretty much an invisible man for the last two years. Obviously, if even half of what Corey says is true, then Paula Abdul has little to no bearing on the outcome of the show. Corey would have had better luck sleeping with Simon, because at least Simon seems to have some pull on the show.

The real story here is why Fox doesn’t release the total number of votes by contestant each week and why some of the voting results seem to defy common sense. Whether a former contestant that was booted and didn't win slept with one of the judges isn’t a scandal. It’s merely a distraction. A distraction that takes away attention from some serious voting irregularities that need to be explained.
