What David Cook Is Really Like

David Cook does the weather on the FOX 4 Morning Show.
Commentary by Rebecca Sapakie
Working as a web producer at FOX 4, I've written dozens
of stories about Blue Springs' native David Cook. And, his
homecoming was a big story here especially since FOX 4 airs
American Idol on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.
I came in about 6:30 a.m. to help with our behind-the-scenes
web coverage. I met the American Idol producers and David
Cook.
He seemed genuine and honest. He's clearly being guided by
his new "handlers." But, he's also clearly not
stupid.
He gets it. He gets that he's lucky. That people now know
him and love him who never even heard of him six months ago.
When our anchors told him his CD was on sale for a couple
hundred dollars, he said "Six months ago, I couldn't
even give it away."
He was being pulled in a lot of directions. Our morning
show needed him for three segments. Our promotions department
wanted him to cut a promo. And, we in the little web area
really wanted him to chat with our hundreds of fans online
for a few moments.
When I asked him to chat online, he didn't hesitate. He
just pulled the keyboard toward him and started typing. He
thanked his fans. And, spent several minutes chatting back
and forth.
I wasn't sure what to expect when he arrived at the station.
We knew he had a police escort and an entourage of a few
Idol producers and photographers. So, sometimes that can
mean "diva."
But, in my honest opinion, he didn't seem like a diva. He
seemed honest and thankful.
If he doesn't win, I don't think he'll cry. I think he's
happy to have made it this far. He knows he's lucky and he's
got to enjoy the ride.
