'Idol' starts out bad, and fans love it

TV shows don't usually boast about how bad they can be,
but that's the big selling point for "American Idol's" hugely
popular season-opening auditions.
"You'll see the usual parade of the absolutely useless
believing they are the best singers in the world (and) hating
me when I say they're not good enough," judge Simon
Cowell says. "But I'm used to that."
Viewers can expect a hairy-chested guy in a harem costume
and a performer who rivals all-time horror William Hung during
Season 7's four-week audition round, which began Jan. 15
and Jan. 16 on the Fox network.
Audition shows accounted for "Idol's" seven most-watched
episodes last season, topped by the season premiere's 38.1
million viewers. Record audition numbers nearly canceled
out a ratings drop in the finals, leaving "Idol" down
just 1 percent for the season, averaging 30.2 million viewers.
Viewers will see some talented singers. San Diego stands
out among cities that include Atlanta, Miami, Omaha and Charleston,
S.C., judges Randy Jackson and Paula Abdul say. Cowell says
no city was as bad as Season 6's Seattle, which nevertheless
produced winner Jordin Sparks, runner-up Blake Lewis and
the much-discussed Sanjaya Malakar.
"San Diego was sick, dude. Amazing talent down there," Jackson
says.
Abdul and Jackson say this season's singers shape up as
the best yet, even as Jackson acknowledges, "I know
we say it every darn year." Cowell, who calls himself "Idol' "s "eternal
pessimist," says the talent is better than it was last
season.
Margo Kujat, 48, of Herndon, Va., speaks for fans who would
like to see more good auditions mixed with the bad, but that's
not going to happen. "Idol" plans to let viewers
get to know the best singers better than they did last season,
but it won't change a winning bad-to-good ratio in the auditions,
executive producer Nigel Lythgoe says.
Says Cecile Frot-Coutaz, another executive producer: "The
early rounds are more about humor and surprises."
And don't expect "Idol" to shy from controversy,
as when the judges were criticized for being too mean during
last season's auditions. "Idol's" rejections can
be "slightly cruel," Lythgoe says.
Fox reality program chief Mike Darnell says "Idol" always
has "both aspiration and true reality, the negative
moments. The year this show doesn't have controversy, it's
over."
