'Dancing with the Stars' judge Bruno Tonioli: We want Paula

reality competition first surfaced when Dancing with the
Stars professional Louis van Amstel said Abdul expressed
interest in the ABC show in January. Dancing host Tom Bergeron
later claimed Abdul told him she'd "love" to compete
on the show, resulting in the American Idol judge confirming
her interest on Monday. However, unlike most Dancing with the Stars participants, Abdul isn't exactly an amateur when it comes to dancing. She worked as a Los Angeles Lakers' Laker Girl and eventually became the group's choreographer in the 1980s and has also choreographed music videos for numerous artists and her music video for "Opposites Attract" won a 1991 Grammy Award for Best Short Form Music Video. But despite Abdul's resume, Tonioli doesn't think the dancing experience would necessarily give her an advantage. "The thing I tell everybody is that it's such a different technique," he told TV Guide. "Ballroom and Latin are so different, and Paula was doing hip-hop. She was a commercial dancer. That's what [fellow judge Carrie Ann Inaba] and I used to do. With this, you'd have to relearn everything. It would not be unfair. I think if she wants to do it, she should do it. It would be very interesting." If Abdul were to compete as a celebrity participant, Tonioli suggested van Amstel, Mark Ballas or Derek Hough as possible professional partners. "Are you allowed to have dream partners?" Abdul told TV Guide when asked whom she'd like to dance with. "And 'the forces' can make that happen? Wow. I didn't know that. I have to be very set with my intent so you'll have to come back to me with that question. But I like the idea that the force can be with me. I have my list." "it would be a phenomenal experience for me to be a student," Adbul told TV Guide when asked whether she'd be participating in Dancing with the Stars' Fall 2008 edition. "It's a form of dance that I've never been introduced to."
